Residents at OAK Creek District 1 are getting a new Alderperson this spring.
In office, Steve Kurkowski chose not to run, so the newcomers Zachary Hittman and Alicia Haase are the two elections in April 1.
To help voters learn more about candidates, Sentinel magazine asked the same three questions for each candidate and the candidates were given a 100-word border for their responses.
Many large chains have decided to come to Wisconsin through OAK Creek, including IKEA and Buc-EE. What is the city doing good to attract these big business investments and how will you help continue this moment?
Zachary Hittman: OAK Creek has done an amazing job by creating an environment where businesses want to invest, and this is something you have to be really proud of. The city’s focus on strategic growth and infrastructure improvements has made it a leading place for companies. To keep this moment, it is essential to continue investing in infrastructure, supporting our work strength and staying connected to businesses. Supporting local entrepreneurs along with large investments will help create a balanced and flowering economy. Oak Creek growth reflects the dedication of her people. By embracing a smart, sustainable development, we can build a city that benefits everyone while preserving its unique character.
Alicia Haase: This is what we have worked for so many in the last 18 months on the tourism board. Last year we passed funds for the Discover Wisconsin contract, which is a multi-year marketing agreement that focuses on our city, what makes it unique, people, businesses and more. More strategies like this and focus on what OAK Creek makes a great place for businesses and their employees is what I plan to continue to go home.
Hittman: The loss of long businesses feels deep, both economically and emotionally. Some of my early memories are buying at Piggly Wiggly with my mother. These businesses were an essential part of our community. If you are resolved, I will prioritize the proactive business of business, promoting open communication with local businesses to understand their challenges before leaving. We need policies that support businesses of all sizes, helping them overcome labor shortages, operational costs and market change. Together, we can recover free spaces, attract new businesses and create a community where businesses bloom and feel supported for the long run.
Haase: We have to dig why these businesses are leaving our city. Each is likely to have a unique reason or situation. I think the key here is building and maintaining open communication lines and lines with our businesses to be proactive vs reactive.
Circle 1 is guaranteed a new Alderperson in this election. Why are you running and what is an idea, skill or approach that only you can bring in the country to benefit from County 1 and the city as a whole?
Hittman: I’m running because I love this city; It has been my family home since the Oak Creek – six generations was founded. Circle 1 deserves careful leadership he listens and creates actions that represent its citizens. This is who I am. As a small business owner and active neighbor, I see what needs our community every day. I know how to unite people and relieve good ideas in real progress. I’m not just running to fill a place; I’m running to plant deeper roots and help OAK Creek grow. “Rooted in Oak Creek. Growing together. “
Haase: Almost two years ago now, Mayor Dan (Bukewicz) asked me if I would be interested in serving on the Tourism Board. Since then, I have been pleased to be on the committee and move it forward with some difficult decisions. Last year, our biggest investments were formalizing our agreement with the city on the services we were receiving, and the Discover Wisconsin agreement. Being on the committee has made my passion for people and my city to continue to grow.
