I am a single mother and I have recently been employed as a federal worker restricted by a distance, which means I am within the 50 mile radius of an office.
I’ve always been distant. I like it because I don’t have to do everything in this Very small window. I have to bring my children to their activities without making them feel stressed or Stressing myself out – but I would have taken this job if it were not completely remote, based on the wage clash. It’s worth it.
I’ve always been a supporter of public service. Somehow I ended up working for the American people.
I saw it as a goal – and I was relieved. A federal job means pension and really good benefits. If you are a high performer, there is an easy way to continue your work. Is not the highest salary you can get but you work with really great people who want to do really good things for this country.
I worked so hard last year. In the last four months of the year, I got the house in my name, a new car to better allow monthly car payments – and then this job, which was a great rise for me.
Finally, I would have something stable for me and my children. In 2025, I just wanted to gather, rest and enjoy what I finally got.
Then, my agency recently received our instructions for returning to the office.
We are expected to return to the next two months.
Since my position is covered by a unit of collective negotiations, I am waiting on my specific return date, but the reception is that I will return in full time in person.
In addition to RTO’s order, my agency lost thousands of workers between the prominent resignation program and the completion of probation workers.
Most test workers in my team were completed. I don’t know why I wasn’t. I have theory, but they are really just that.
I will not take a break for a long time
I have two children. My youngest goes to daily care, but will start school in the fall. My oldest is in school, but usually stays at home for summer.
I have my children five nights a week and they are in many activities. One of them recently began competitive sports and has essentially become their identity. Both of my children see their friends in their activities, they have their teachers – it’s an outlet for them. She keeps their lives busy and they don’t have to worry about the little things.
Keeping things as normal as possible is very important to me, and I felt like activities helped go through divorce.
After the day care was done in late summer, I had a deal with their father that he would begin sharing 50/50 activities. By then, I essentially put the bill for their activities, which is thousands of dollars from the pocket.
I entered a lot of debt only from the first year of competitive sports. So, I was excited that I didn’t have to worry about it – but how much it would cost to send them before and after school care, it’s essentially the same amount we are paying every week now for my child to go to daily care. So we wouldn’t take rest for a really long time.
The earliest I can bring my children to the care of the day is 6:30 am, so I would have to wake them up at 5:45 in the morning, to remove them at 6:30 am, go to work until 7:15 am, quit work until 3:15 in the afternoon, catch them at 4:15 after 4:30 an hour. I can fight with taking them in their activities in time, especially because their activities can change at 4 pm
I am also concerned about those who are able to perform academically or in their activities if they do not get enough sleep. With their activities, sometimes they do not reach bed until 9:00 am and they are very young. At least they sleep 10 nights.
I sent by email with daily care to find out what the fees would be to send back older before and after school care. I also contacted a family friend to see if she would be open to take care of the children, and she offered a much cheaper rate. It is outside the school circle, however, so it is just an option during the summer.
For now I pay $ 326 a week for a child to go to daily care. We were anticipating to go down to $ 0 after they started school in August. Daily care during the school year for both children would be $ 479 a week. If we were supposed to take full -time daily care over the summer for both children would be $ 619 a week. After both children are in school in August it will be $ 323 a week.
RTO’s mandate is difficult, but at this point, the biggest challenge is the stability of work and the assurance that I can provide for my children after my ex-husband and I split in 2023.
I worked so hard to find a way to keep the lives of my children normal. If I were to lose my job, it would be devastating to lose that income.
